Modest Mouse were one of the most surprising commercial success stories of the new millennium — while their music was by turns taut and elliptical, and the lyrics sometimes cryptic and introspective, the band broke through to the mainstream audience with the platinum-selling Good News for People Who Love Bad News, and they became genuine rock stars at a time when their musical peers remained cult figures. Modest Mouse was founded in 1993 by guitarist and vocalist Isaac Brock, bassist Eric Judy, and drummer Jeremiah Green. Brock, who had a nomadic childhood, was only 18 and living in a shed next to his mother’s trailer home when Modest Mouse began working together, with the shed becoming the new band’s rehearsal space and base of operations. In 1994, Modest Mouse booked time at Calvin Johnson’s Dub Narcotic Studio in Olympia, Washington to cut their first record, and Johnson released their debut 7″, “Blue Cadet-3, Do You Connect?,” on his K Records label. Modest Mouse soon began work on an album, but the project was abandoned and the material went unreleased until 2001, when it appeared on a collection called Sad Sappy Sucker.

After releasing a handful of singles, Modest Mouse went into the studio with Johnson as producer to record an EP, The Fruit That Ate Itself, but by the time it was released, the group had already moved on to another Northwest-based indie label, Up Records. 1996′s This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About, produced in collaboration with Steve Wold (who would find fame a few years later as grizzled blues hobo Seasick Steve), was Modest Mouse’s first proper album, and received enthusiastic reviews in the independent music press. In 1997, Modest Mouse returned with The Lonesome Crowded West, which earned more positive press and was a considerable sales success by indie label standards, supported by extensive touring. As Modest Mouse’s following grew, they were courted by major-label scouts, and they eventually signed with Epic Records, who released The Moon & Antarctica in 2000. A collection of demos and session outtakes, Everywhere and His Nasty Parlour Tricks, was issued in 2001, and Brock released an album with his side project Ugly Casanova in 2002. In 2003, it was announced that drummer Green had left Modest Mouse; Benjamin Weikel of the Helio Sequence became the group’s new percussionist (he also doubled on keyboards), and Dann Gallucci, who had been a guest guitarist on the sessions for Sad Sappy Sucker and The Lonesome Crowded West, became an official member of the band.

The new lineup recorded 2004′s Good News for People Who Love Bad News, which proved to be Modest Mouse’s commercial breakthrough, rising to the top of the album charts, spawning the hit singles “Float On” and “Ocean Breathes Salty,” and selling over a million copies as the band began headlining arenas. By the end of 2004, Green returned to Modest Mouse, and in 2006, after Gallucci left the group, the band recruited Johnny Marr, legendary guitarist with the Smiths, to take his place for the recording of their next album. Marr not only appeared on 2007′s We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, he became a full member of Modest Mouse and toured with the group in support of the album, which debuted at number one on the Billboard album charts. In 2005, Brock had launched his own record label, Glacial Pace Records, saying the name reflected his own slow working habits; while Modest Mouse continued to play live shows, work on their next album progressed very gradually, and in 2009 they issued a collection of outtakes and non-LP single sides, No One’s First, And You’re Next, as a stopgap. A tour was launched in support, but as Marr had joined the Cribs, Jim Fairchild (who had worked with Grandaddy and All Smiles) became the group’s new guitarist, and when Modest Mouse played a round of shows in 2012, the group debuted a new lineup with the addition of second percussionist Joe Plummer. While Eric Judy was still an official member of the band, for some 2012 dates he was replaced by multi-instrumentalist Tom Peloso, who had been touring with the group as a sideman since 2004.

The Shins – Discography (2001-2012) [FLAC]

A classic guitar pop group almost nine years in the making, Albuquerque, New Mexico’s the Shins began in 1997 as the side project of singer/songwriter and guitarist James Mercer’s primary band, Flake. Mercer formed Flake in 1992 with drummer Jesse Sandoval, keyboardist Marty Crandall, and bassist Neal Langford; they eventually changed their name to Flake Music, releasing several singles, a well-received album, When You Land Here, It’s Time to Return, and touring with friends like Modest Mouse and Califone.

Soon after the release of When You Land Here, Mercer and Sandoval formed the Shins as a change of pace, playing as a duo with Cibo Matto and the American Analog Set. With Mercer as the Shins’ primary songwriter, the group developed a more focused, crafted sound than Flake Music’s charming, if somewhat rambling, collaborative style. Crandall, as well as Scared of Chaka’s Dave Hernandez and Ron Skrasek, filled out the Shins’ lineup; however, Hernandez and Skrasek left after a short while, due to the success of their main project. By 1999, Flake Music essentially disbanded and Langford also joined the Shins.

With a couple of 7″s on Omnibus — 1998′s “Nature Bears a Vacuum” and 2000′s “When I Goose-Step” — under their belts, the Shins embarked on a tour with Modest Mouse. Sub Pop’s Jonathan Poneman caught the San Francisco date of the tour and asked the Shins to contribute a single to the label’s Single of the Month Club, which eventually became an offer to release their 2001 single “New Slang” and their debut album, Oh, Inverted World. The group spent the rest of the year touring with acts such as Preston School of Industry and Red House Painters. The release of the singles “Know Yr Onion!” and “The Past and the Pending” kept the Shins’ success going into 2002, cementing Oh, Inverted World as one of the definitive indie rock albums of the early 2000s and the band as one of the style’s definitive artists.

By the time the band recorded their second album, Chutes Too Narrow, Langford was replaced on bass by Dave Hernandez (ex-Scared of Chaka). The album appeared in fall 2003, their first to reach the Billboard charts. the Shins’ profile increased drastically the next year when actor Zach Braff included several of their songs in his 2004 movie Garden State with one of the main characters going so far as to proclaim that “New Slang” would “change your life.” Its follow-up, Wincing the Night Away, appeared in January 2007 and sold over a staggering 100,000 copies in its first week. the Shins had never before hit higher than number 86 on the Billboard charts, but the album’s sales snagged the guys a debut spot of number two. (This was also a record for Sub Pop itself, as the label had only previously peaked at number 79 with the Afghan Whigs’ 1996 album Black Love.) It was also nominated for a Grammy for Best Alternative Album.

In 2008, the band announced that their contract with Sub Pop was up, and that their next album would be released through Mercer’s own Aural Apothecary label. The resulting Port of Morrow featured an all new backing band, including fellow songwriters Jessica Dobson and Richard Swift, Modest Mouse drummer Joe Plummer, and Yuuki Matthews from the Crystal Skulls. It arrived in March 2012, received generally positive reviews, and promptly reached number three on the Billboard charts.

Mutter ist eine der wenigen Gruppen in diesem Land, die dessen
Befindlichkeiten vollkommen wertfrei festzustellen vermag — seit annhernd 30
Jahren, auf dem nunmehr zwlften Album. “Text und Musik” strotzt indes vor
klanglicher Milde und entfacht vermutlich smtlichen in den Hintergrund
gerckten Lrm erst auf offener Bhne. Als jedermanns Liebling taugt es
trotzdem nicht. Dafr singt Max Mller immer noch zu vorbehaltlos ungelenk,
dagegen sprechen seine grundehrlichen Texte: “Am Abend gehen wir aus und sehen
die anderen wie uns selbst.” Was natrlich niemand hren will.

Das unzureichende Bild, das sich demnach ein jeder von der Welt und von den
Menschen macht, kann aber nur sein eigenes bleiben, der Spiegel seines
Inneren, seiner Unzulnglichkeiten. Was ich bei anderen nicht ertrage, hat vor
allem mit mir selbst zu tun, weil ich es mir vielleicht nicht eingestehen
mchte oder kann. Erkenntnisse, die in dem nivellierenden
Gruppenzwangsgewitter vergehen, dem wir uns als Gesellschaft unterworfen
haben. Stattdessen treten bizarr sinnfreie Aktionen wie Eiswasser-Duschen als
virulenter Ablasshandel zu Tage oder es werden schlimmstenfalls die blichen
Sndenbcke durchs Dorf getrieben. Nur dass Mutter diese Dinge eben nicht
partout ndern, sondern vielmehr die Wahrnehmung ihrer Zuhrer dafr schrfen
wollen, auf dass sie solcherlei Zusammenhnge berhaupt erkennen und die fr
sich richtigen Schlsse aus ihnen ziehen knnen. Mndigkeit als echte
Alternative, nicht blo als trgerische Pose.

Trotz mehrerer Umstellungen im Bandgefge sind die Berliner ihrem
grundstzlichen Klangspektrum treu geblieben, bieten Diskurs-Rock mit sachten
Noise-Unterftterungen und manch alterspunkigem Dorn im Ohr. Allein die
musikalischen Aszendenten haben ber die Jahre ihre Positionen getauscht, weg
vom Krach frher Sonic Youth sowie dem Zuviel an elektronischen Sperenzchen,
hin zum organischen Pop der neueren Blumfeld und wieder zurck. Das Ergebnis
klingt verfhrerischer, aber deshalb keinen Deut weniger irritierend. So
erinnert “Ihr kleines Herz” an eine Indierock-Miniatur der Sterne, inklusive
prgnantem Funk-Gitarrenlick. Letzteres mag dem betrenden “So viel Platz”
wiederum fehlen, aber die eingeschlagene Nhe zu Frank Spilkers Liedern wird
zunchst beibehalten, um im Finale “Ich will nicht mehr als das” dann unter
der Devise “Selbstbeschrnkung aus” noch einmal in eine doomige
Post-Punk-Starre zu verfallen, als sei vorher nichts gewesen.

Dabei bedient sich “Text und Musik” auch sonst einer Vielzahl von Einflssen
zwischen geluterten Schweisser und der Eindringlichkeit eines Rio Reiser, sei
es nun bewusst oder eher zufllig. “Qui?” berrascht gar als siebenmintiges
Versprechen einer Kante-Meditation, die auf einen imaginren Hhepunkt
zustrebt, ihn aber nie erreicht, weil keiner wei, wer bei diesem herrlichen
Stck Frhlingserwachen berhaupt singen soll. Dennoch hallt es als einziges
Instrumental gewaltig nach, mit seinen akustischen Gitarrentupfern und einer
Querflten-Begleitung wie zu uralten Kraftwerk-Zeiten: scheinbar sinnlos, weil
ohne echte Dramaturgie, aber zugleich voller aufmunterndem Trost. Eben diese
Dualitt ist es schlielich, die Mutter ausmacht. Hier werden Makel und Fehler
nicht einfach ausgesperrt, sondern als Teile des Ganzen begriffen, die man fr
sich akzeptieren und annehmen muss, will man zum Kern aller Antworten
vordringen. Wobei es sicherlich frderlich wre, berhaupt erst einmal die
richtigen Fragen stellen zu knnen. Wer Mutter hufiger zuhrt, kann ein
eigenes Gespr dafr entwickeln. Die reine Lehre der vielschichtigen
Eindeutigkeit, sozusagen. Meine Hochachtung, Dozent Mller.
